Youth Connections
Making a lifelong impact
The one2one program facilitates the pairing of qualified adult mentors with children and youths aged 7 and up. This initiative establishes one-to-one mentoring relationships that persist as long as all parties involved wish to continue. A prerequisite for mentors is a commitment of at least one year upon their initial pairing.
These matches meet 3 to 4 times per month, with meeting days and times arranged for the convenience of both the mentor and the parent or guardian. Some matches might convene on weekends, while others opt for afternoons following school hours. Every mentor-mentee pair develops a custom schedule that suits their preferences.
Mentors pledge to:
Serve as positive role models, reliable friends, and confidantes for their mentees.
Emphasize the significance of academic diligence and staying in school to their mentees.
Illuminate the value of cultivating healthy relationships with family, peers, and community members.
Aid their mentees in building trust in others, boosting self-confidence, and acquiring the skills for sound decision-making and independent thinking.
Share enjoyable experiences with their mentees.
Matches allocate their time to shared activities of interest, which might encompass sports, beach outings, shared meals, or simply spending time together. The selection of activities is not mandated – mentors and mentees collaboratively partake in activities they both enjoy, potentially introducing each other to novel experiences.
The program maintains a system of scheduled check-ins for match management, involving agency personnel interacting individually with mentors, parents, and mentees. This approach guarantees that any concerns are promptly addressed, with an unwavering focus on the safety of the children.
The agency places a strong emphasis on mentor training and continuous support, valuing these aspects as top priorities.
one2one Teen Parent Mentoring Program
This initiative represents a collaboration between one2one and the Family Resource Centre’s (FRC) - Young Parent Services program. The program focuses on equipping young parents with essential skills in parenting, life management, technology, and employability. To ensure comprehensive support, one2one contributes mentors who are dedicated to assisting these young parents for a minimum period of one year.
The role of the one2one mentor complements the services provided by FRC by aiding teenage parents in making informed decisions and cultivating a responsible use of their voice. Consequently, this effort contributes to nurturing a wholesome relationship between the parent and child, along with enhancing the parent's ability to navigate various social dynamics beyond their immediate family.
Central to this collaboration is the mentor's dedication to creating a safe haven where teenage parents can momentarily set aside the challenges of parenthood and engage in enjoyable activities.
one2one and the future -
The one2one team is excited about the ongoing journey of building inventive mentoring initiatives tailored to address the specific needs of children, youth, and emerging adults within our community. Answering the call articulated by parents and seasoned mentees alike, we are on the cusp of embarking on a new endeavor – the establishment of our inaugural Mentoring Circles for Boys.
This initiative will facilitate the convergence of adult male mentors and young men, with a distinct focus on addressing the subjects that matter most to young men aged 17 to 25. Our intention is to provide guidance and support in areas that resonate with these young men's concerns and challenges. Notably, our emphasis is on involving those young men who have lacked a paternal presence in their lives.
